The general objective is to propose plant material adapted to drought, analytical methods and decision-making tools for improving and/or stabilising agricultural production in arid and semi-arid zones . The classical methods for breeding and creating new plant varieties have shown their limits under conditions of severe and unpredictable drought.

The specific objectives are therefore to:

  • develop a multidisplinary approach, closely associating and integrating agronomy, physiology, selection, modelling and molecular biology, into breeding programmes of NARS teams, in order to optimise them;
  • use the knowledge acquired through research, to develop products, analytical methods and decision making tools for agricultural systems with limited water resources;
  • strengthen the capacity of NARS research teams by reducing their isolation and facilitating access to and transfer of knowledge.
